Severe gales due to hit county
16:12, 17 January 2007
KENT Police are urging people to be prepared for severe gales that are expected to sweep across the county tomorrow.
People are being asked to secure any objects that could cause injury or damage if left unattended in the storm that is forecast.
The Met Office is predicting severe weather and dangerously high winds in the south east between 2am and 11pm tomorrow though gusts are expected to start easing during tomorrow afternoon.
Police are also asking people to consider whether any journeys they plan to make during tomorrow are necessary as there could be disruption on the county’s roads if the gales are very strong.
A police spokesman said: "Should there be storm force winds as expected – with gusts of around 60 to 70 miles per hour and a risk of gusts around 80 miles per hour in exposed places – driving could be made hazardous by debris or fallen trees and the winds could cause traffic delays as well as possible power cuts.
"High sided vehicles may be affected and warnings and speed restrictions may need to be issued where the winds would be strongest – including the M2 Medway bridge, the A249 Sheppey Crossing and the M25 Dartford river crossing.
"If the winds start to affect Channel sea crossings, it is possible that Kent Police may need to introduce Operation Stack on the M20 to deal with any backlog of freight traffic.
"In the event of a power cut, people are reminded to have a stock of torches, candles and matches.
"Please keep candles away from children and pets, away from draughts and anything that could easily catch fire, for example furniture, curtains or newspapers. Make sure they are secure in a heat resistant holder so they can’t fall over."
People are also advised to keep a battery radio, to charge mobile phones and to avoid opening fridge or freezer doors to help prevent food spoiling.
Kent Police have issued the following advice to drivers:
* Avoid unnecessary journeys
* Expect your journey to take longer than usual and be prepared for delays
* Tune in to local radio and TV stations or check websites to get the latest weather and traffic bulletins before departing
* Tell someone where you’re going and what time you expect to be back
* Keep well within the designated speed limits
* Keep a safe distance from the car in front
* Check your fuel, lights, tyres, engine fluids, wipers and screen wash before your journey
* Be prepared and take a blanket and hot drink in case you are delayed
