Motorists are being warned of hazardous driving conditions and long delays due to a sudden burst of snow during rush-hour.

Police say they have dealt with several crashes as a result of the weather - a mixture of snow and ice - with the M2, A249, A21 and A2 among the worst areas affected.

Blue Bell Hill has been closed in both directions "due to the heavy snowfall and amount of stranded vehicles in the carriageway".

Kent Fire and Rescue are urging people to avoid the Walderslade Woods area because of the number of trees that have fallen.

Police have also closed Detling Hill "due to it being too dangerous to allow vehicles down the hill", including 4x4s.

It has been shut since around 5.30pm, which has in turn caused long delays for traffic on the M20 trying to get towards Maidstone and Ashford.

Some motorists say they have been stuck in the area of at least three hours.

Highways officials say snow fall on the A21 has slowed traffic to a standstill on sections between Pembury and Hurst Green.

Snowy conditions have also been causing slow traffic on the M2 between J2 (Strood/Rochester) and J4 (Gillingham).

Police have issued a warning about conditions in Wrotham Hill, Sevenoaks.

Arriva bus services in and around Medway area have been suspended.

It comes after a yellow warning for ice was issued by Met Office for this afternoon, which remains in place until 11am tomorrow.

Police described the conditions as "horrible" and say patrols are helping to free stranded motorists.

They urged people to only venture out unless their is absolutely necessary.

Drivers are also being reminded to ensure they have suitable clothing and equipment with them.
