Snow falls in Kent as Met Office issues yellow weather warning for ice and snow

Snow is falling in Kent as temperatures plunge – with the Met Office issuing a warning over ice.

The white stuff has fallen in Ashford, Maidstone, and parts of Medway so far today with car parks, gardens and roads left covered.

It comes as the Met Office has released a yellow weather warning for wintry showers which will lead to some icy patches and snow cover in places.

The warning is in place from 5pm today until 10am tomorrow.

It means journey times could be longer by road, bus and train.

Ice could also cover untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths, with warnings over potential injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces.

In addition, a cold-health alert has been issued for the UK.

The yellow alert warns the severe cold could increase the health risks of vulnerable people and interrupt the supply of services.

The cold snap will cover the whole of England, with the Midlands and the North expected to be the worst-affected.

The UK Health Security Agency advises pensioners and people with underlying health conditions to keep their heating on to a minimum of 18C, and is encouraging friends and neighbours to check on vulnerable people.

The agency also warns that “overnight frosts will be sharp and widespread with only limited recovery of temperatures by day”.

The severe weather alert will remain in place until Tuesday, December 5, at noon.

There are also reports of black ice causing hazardous driving conditions, with cars skidding and crashing in Blean, between Whitstable and Canterbury.

Train services are also affected by a build-up of ice on the rails.

In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), a Southeastern spokesperson said: “Ice on the rail that supplies power to our trains at Bekesbourne is blocking the line between Dover and Canterbury East.”
