Football fans have been hailed heroes after lifting a car up off a woman involved in an accident outside a Medway pub.

Supporters of Bury FC in Gillingham for the League Two battle with the Gills on Saturday rushed to help the woman who had stepped out into the road close to the Livingstone Arms in Gillingham. She has been named in the Bury press as Jackie Adams, and is believed to be in her 40s.

Pub landlord Bob Austin, said: “We were packed out at the time and I was busy serving, so I didn’t see it.

“I knew there was a commotion outside and people told me what happened afterwards.

“I thought it was really good of the fans to help the woman.”

Customer Chris Kearns, 30, who lives in nearby Napier Road, added: “It was mental outside.

“There were so many fans the streets were really crowded, it was no wonder the woman was hit by the car.

“I think about 20 Bury fans moved the car off her, she had injured her legs.

“After the car was moved off the woman, she was put in an ambulance and she waved to us as she went off.”

The woman is believed to have suffered a broken leg during the accident and needed surgery.

A spokesman for Medway Police said: “It appears that the woman ran out into the road, she tripped and was hit by a car.

“She was taken to hospital with a compound fracture of her leg and went into theatre.

“There were a number of Bury fans nearby, one of whom gave her some first aid at the scene while emergency services arrived.

“The driver of the car stopped and witnesses confirmed it was an accident.”
