Young defender Callum Davies will have no fears about facing Crewe once more if selected this weekend.

A lack of numbers saw Gills boss Andy Hessenthaler call upon the 19-year-old on Tuesday night.

Davies is ready for more but still remembers his Gills debut against Crewe, at Priestfield last season, where he was sent-off just 26 minutes in after a challenge on Clayton Donaldson (pictured).

"I haven't started since and hopefully I can complete a game soon," said the centre-back.

"I don't worry about that and I am not superstitious. I want to get one back on them, as such, and if I do get my chance, then hopefully I can stay on the pitch, help us to the three points and get us back in the play-offs."

Davies may well lose his place again if Simon King recovers from illness but he feels that he and Connor Essam play well together.

The pair have grown up together at the club, partnering each other at the back for the youth and reserve teams.

"We travel in together, go on holiday together and know each other inside out," Davies added.

Davies, from Lower Halstow, began with the Gills as a six-year-old and was making only his fourth senior appearance for the club on Tuesday night after coming off the bench to replace Garry Richards.

He said: "I just got my head down and it was probably better to be chucked in as it meant I didn't have a chance to get nervous."

Davies believes the club's upturn in fortunes is helping bring the squad close and it's through on-line gaming that the team bonding is being built.

"We don't go out for a beer but there were about 10 of us that got together the other night to play Call of Duty," admits Davies - and competition is fierce.

"I am up there with the best and Curtis Weston is decent but Charlie Lee is definitely no good and Connor Essam is horrendous!

"The mood in the camp is good and we just have to maintain that."
