When I think of a greasy spoon I think of Dot Cotton sipping on a cup of tea on an off white chair at an off white table with walls that can only be described as yellow-ish.

My memories of watching EastEnders are hazy but this seems about right.

Living in Rochester, my eating options are plentiful. Cafe Nucleus has been the scene for a classy birthday brunch while Lorenzo's has saved me from my hangover with their sandwiches.

Neither of these fit the greasy spoon bill, and you could be forgiven for thinking Rochester is another town without one - thanks to gentrification...

However, if you make it to the end of the High Street and towards where the police station was, round the corner from Playopolis you'll find the closest thing on offer: the cafe, the myth, Legends.

But it’s a long way from Ian Beale’s plastic paradise.

A recent revamp has made the place feel more modern. A quick look on TripAdviser shows that the walls were the off yellow of Kathy’s Cafe and the tables all joined together in a way that makes it rather uncomfortable to slide into.

But now it has lovely dark wooden chairs standing independently and the look of brick wallpaper. I feel less greasy already.

The decor is only a minor point. Especially when two breakfasts and two coffees come to just £13.40.

Why go to Costa when you can get a coffee for just £1.50 here? These are greasy spoon prices.

The huge menu up on the wall was a little daunting. The fear of a queue building up behind you can lead you to make the wrong choice. You don't want to start a day like that.

But the lady behind the counter waited patiently and was very friendly. Even when we got confused over her very simple question about the bread…

I went for the third set breakfast and a coffee. As did my sister.

Number 1 has a controversial burger on offer. Opinions in the comments...

We took a seat and it appeared within seconds. The coffee was in a proper mug and scalding hot - as the roof of my mouth discovered.

A ridiculous amount of bread soon followed and then the breakfast.

I had my reservations on first sight: "Was that egg runny? That bacon could be crispier. How many beans?!"

But it tasted delightful.

The egg was runny, perfect for dipping, and didn’t have that added layer of oil around the edges.

The bacon was full of flavour and the mountain of bread helped mop up the beans.

It was a simple, tasty breakfast that kept me going for hours.

As someone who is often mocked for having chips on the side of her ketchup, I have to also give bonus points for the condiment choice. Bottles of ‘Heinz’ ketchup rather than annoying little sachets and a big sugar shaker. Bonus points from me.

While the food was great. The price a dream. My favourite thing about this simple cafe was the atmosphere.

There was a mix of old men enjoying a peaceful breakfast, dads taking the kids out for the morning and women catching up on the last week with friends.

Everyone that came in was greeted with big smiles and everyone who left got a thank you and a wave.

The staff were clearly pleased to be working there despite it being a miserable Saturday morning.

The young girl helping seemed excited to carry out her little tasks and took great care on the specials board.

So while you have the options of fancy fine dining or a pint and a fry up at the chain pub down the road, I’d highly suggest turning just off the High Street for a lovely meal at Legends.
