A Kent MP has delivered a stinging condemnation of President Trump for an order banning Syrian refugees and suspending the entry into the USA by Muslim nationals from seven different countries.

Gillingham MP Rehman Chishti said the order would only serve to fuel extremism and increase the risk of a terror attack.

"It is likely to feed into the hands of terrorists and extremists. They want to create an impression of war between Islam and civilisation. When you have someone coming to the UK who is openly promoting a policy which is discriminatory and some would say racist then I think we have a moral obligation to make very clear his actions are wrong, unacceptable and makes the world a dangerous place."

He said the President deserved to be told that the UK believed him to be wrong and was out of step with British values.

He told Sky news: "What do you do when you have somebody who takes a certain position, which is discriminatory, inhumane and contrary to British values, do you say nothing or do you stand up and go with your values and your morals and what stands for the United Kingdom such as freedom and liberty?"

"If he makes remarks that put the world in a dangerous place and divides the world then we have a moral obligation at every lelvel to say he is wrong."

More than 21,000 people from around Kent have signed a petition calling for an invitation to President Trump to make a state visit to the UK to be withdrawn.

A total of more than 1 million people have added their names to the petition, started after the President issued an order halting the US refugee programme for 120 days and indefinitely banning all Syrian refugees and suspending the entry of all nationals from seven Muslim-majority countries.

The petition argues that he should not receive a full state visit, including audiences with the royal family, “because it would cause embarrassment to Her Majesty the Queen”.

Across Kent’s parliamentary seats, the most number of signatories has come from Canterbury, then Tunbridge Wells and Folkestone.

But the petition has been given short shrift from the South East Kent MP Janice Atkinson. She said:

"The call to ban Mr Trump is like stroppy teenagers not getting their way. We should welcome a President that supports Brexit, has an instinctive dislike of supra national dictatorships like the EU and would like a free trade deals with us which, I am told, by those close to him, could take 90 days.

At last a man who does and means what he says."

Downing Street has indicated the invitation to the President will not be withdrawn but the government has come under fire for its stance and a large protest is expected to take place this evening in London.

The petition organisers said: “Donald Trump’s well-documented misogyny and vulgarity disqualifies him from being received by the Queen or the Prince of Wales. Therefore during the term of his presidency Donald Trump should not be invited to the United Kingdom for an official state visit.”

The number signing the petition means that the Commons will be required to hold a debate on the call.
