A DISABLED driver was surrounded by a group of yobs and then punched in the face by one of them in a seemingly motiveless attack.

The 62-year-old man was dropping his wife off in Rochester High Street when he came across the group near the East Gate off-licence.

He slowed down and the group, comprising about eight or nine youths, moved out of the way. But just at that moment, one of the yobs placed his hands on the bonnet of the disabled man’s car, moved round to the driver’s door and started banging on the window with his fists.

The other youths stood around swearing and the one at the window then told the group that the disabled man had assaulted him.

The disabled man then tried to get out of his car but the youth stopped him. The group then walked away.

The man, thinking he was safe, got out of his car and went to the boot. However, the youth returned and struck the man with his fist on the left side of his face. The man tried to defend himself and the pair fell to the floor.

Some of the group, who had also returned by now, pulled their friend away and walked off in the direction of Crow Lane.

Two men, who then came over to help the victim, said they knew the youth but they did not tell the man his name.

PC Keri Forster said: “This is a totally unprovoked attack on a disabled man who was just giving his wife a lift to the High Street.

“We would like to ask for the two witnesses who stopped to help to contact us as soon as possible to help us with our investigation.

“We need to catch the offender before he has an opportunity to do the same thing again to another innocent member of the public.”

The incident happened at about 6.25pm on Tuesday, March 15. Anyone with information is asked to contact Medway Police on 01634 884252 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
