Yellow weather warning for thunderstorms and heavy rain issued for Kent by Met Office
09:37, 05 August 2023
A weather warning for heavy showers and thunderstorms has been issued for Kent, with up to 25mm of rain expected to fall within an hour.
Forecasters at the Met Office say the downpour could lead to flooding in some areas - and there could be lightning and hail.
The yellow weather warning is in place from 11am today until 10pm this evening.
It comes as Storm Antoni is set to cause disruption across parts of the UK as it arrives today.
But south-western parts of England and Wales are expected to bear the brunt of it, with an amber weather warning for strong winds issued.
Commenting on the yellow warning for Kent, a Met Office spokesman said: “Heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon, some being slow-moving, particularly across south-eastern parts of England later.
“Whilst some places will miss the worst of these, there is the potential for 15mm to 25mm of rain to fall locally within the space of an hour and perhaps 30mm to 40mm to accumulate in two to three hours. Lightning and hail may be additional hazards.
“Conditions will improve from the west through the evening, although only a slow improvement is expected across eastern England.”
