Joe Healy scored twice as Welling reached the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup on Tuesday after winning their replay at Thurrock.

The Wings looked a totally different side to the one that were fortunate to survive Saturday’s tie between the two teams.

A five-man midfield helped their cause and their slick passing moves proved too much for the Ryman League Premier Division outfit.

Welling were ahead inside 10 minutes as Healy beat the offside trap before finishing beyond keeper Will Viner.

Striker Ross Lafayette fired across the face of goal and Jamie Day’s drive was deflected wide before the visitors made it 2-0 on 21 minutes.

Jack Obersteller’s burst into the box saw his deep cross fail to pick out a team-mate. Instead, defender Mark Onyenma’s header failed to clear the danger and skipper Lee Clarke powered in a header of his own from 12 yards via the underside of the bar.

Thurrock got back into the game on 31 minutes when Anthony Acheampong gave away a cheap foul and Leroy Griffiths’ resulting corner was then turned into his own net by the Wings defender.

After the break, Lafeyette was taken out by keeper Viner, who escaped with a caution as there were two covering defenders.

At the other end, Fraser Franks was on hand to clear the danger after keeper Sam Mott raced off his line but could only watch as Luke Wanadio’s shot went beyond him.

The game was put beyond doubt after 63 minutes when Lafayette chased a lost cause and when Thurrock handed him possession back, he slid in Healy who produced a fine left-foot finish to find the far corner.

The victory means Welling will host Bishop’s Stortford in the fourth qualifying round on Saturday, October 20 at Park View Road.
