Kent commuters braced for travel chaos in RMT union strike on London Underground in row over ticket office closures
00:01, 29 April 2014
Kent commuters are being warned to avoid heading into London today with a Tube strike set to cause severe delays on most major routes.
A London Underground walkout led by the RMT union is likely to bring huge congestion for county rail passengers.
The 48-hour strike - from 9pm yesterday until tomorrow night - is in a row over ticket office closures.
The union and transport bosses have met more than 40 times through conciliatory service Acas since the last walkout in February, but talks collapsed yesterday.
Experts say the worst time to travel was thought to be at around 8am today when delays were expected to reach up to 50 minutes to head from the county into the city.
Even those looking to beat the rush by setting off at 6am were likely to be delayed by around 25 minutes on their journey into work.
Travel information service provider Inrix warned Kent commuters to weigh up their options to avoid travel chaos.
Chris Lambert, from Inrix, said: "For many commuters, overground rail services paired with comfortable shoes and an umbrella might be the best option.
"There is no question that another strike will cause more disruption so we would strongly advise drivers to leave early and leave extra time to complete their journeys, check the roads before they travel or better still work from home if that's an option."
