Kent is home to the two most dangerous rural roads in the country, new figures have revealed.

The A229 in Maidstone and the A2 take the top spots while the A249 joins them in the 10 most dangerous roads in the UK.

It's been revealed between 2013 and 2018 there were 175 collisions on the 22-miles of the A299, with 30% of crashes involving young drivers.

There has already been multiple crashes on the road this year.

The new data comes as the AA Charitable Trust launches a new interactive map which displays the most dangerous rural routes in the UK.

The A2 is the second most dangerous road in the country, according to recent figures, and the 71 mile road connects Dover and London.

Between 2013 and 2018 there were 764 collisions on the road, with 26% of crashes involving young drivers.

New research from the AA Charitable Trust revealed 71% of fatal crashes involving young drivers, people aged between 17 and 24, are on rural roads.

It also put A229 and the A2 as the most dangerous rural roads in the UK based on the number of young people involved in a crash per kilometre.

The third road from the county on the list was the A249, which is an 18-mile road which runs from Maidstone to Sheerness, which came in as the ninth most dangerous road.

In the same five year period previously mentioned there has been 246 collisions on the road, with 20% of crashes involving young drivers.

A report from KentOnline earlier this year revealed despite Kent Police recording the fifth highest speeding offences in the country, fatalities from crashes in the county were at an all time low.

In 2019 there were 4,195 accidents in the county. Of the 800 "serious or fatal" crashes from this statistic 39 resulted in a death.

In 2010 the figure was 56 and this has fluctuated from year to year but never been as low as 39.

Dartford, Rochester and Tonbridge all had three fatalities in that time, while Canterbury, Dover, Gillingham, Gravesham and Sevenoaks all had two.

There was only one fatality recorded in each area of Maidstone, Chatham, Ashford, North Thanet, South Thanet, Sittingbourne and Sheppey.
