Star Wars The Force Awakens film parodied by Kent Fire and Rescue Service with smoke alarm message

Jedi knights, princesses and "nerf-herders" are encouraged to turn their lightsabers into lifesavers by checking their smoke alarms.

As the new Star Wars movie The Force Awakens hits cinema screens, Kent's fire service has seized the opportunity to release a parody film - but with a serious message.

The fire safety film features a Jedi firefighter who uses "the Force" - and his lightsaber - to test his smoke alarm.

Kent Fire and Rescue Services' community safety manager Charlie Smith says: "You don't have to be a Jedi to keep your family safe from fire.

"Follow our simple safety tips to protect your loved ones."

The seventh installment in the main Star Wars film series was released

Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens - the seventh installment in the main Star Wars film series, was released at midnight.

Its stars include Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver and Daisy Ridley.
