Ben Martin’s second-half header got Welling back to winning ways in Blue Square Bet South on Saturday.
Back-to-back away defeats had put a dent in Welling’s promotion push but Martin nodded in player-boss Jamie Day’s corner on the hour mark.
It means the Wings remain three points behind leaders Salisbury with two games in hand.
Welling had the best of a mainly scrappy first half, Ross Lafayette firing wide and Joe Healy seeing his shot deflected behind for a corner.
The visitors barely registered a shot in the first half and Welling continued to look the more likely after the break. Kiernan Hughes-Mason led a breakaway from a Havant corner but Jon Main’s touch let him down and the ball was cleared behind for a corner.
The miss did not prove too costly, however, as Day delivered with precision for Martin to climb above Ed Harris inside the six-yard box and head past former Wings keeper Clark Masters.
Welling could have added to their tally as Hughes-Mason twice went close while Wings keeper Sam Mott had to save smartly to deny Ollie Palmer an equaliser with five minutes remaining.
