A wonder goal from Andy Pugh moved Welling up to third in Blue Square Bet South on Saturday.

Pugh (pictured) took his tally to 12 for the season with a brilliant 20-yard right-foot shot beyond keeper Craig Ross.

Ross, who played for Welling against Gillingham in the Kent Senior Cup earlier this month, returned to Hampton in midweek.

He pulled off a number of brilliant saves to prevent his team from a heavy defeat.

Welling, who reshuffled their team to bring Andy Sambrook into the middle of defence, got off to the perfect start when Anthony Acheampong headed in Jamie Day’s deep free-kick as early as the sixth minute.

Wings keeper Dan Thomas had to be alert to keep out Jack Obersteller’s back header but thereafter it was Welling’s attack against Ross for the rest of the half.

Day saw his excellent right-foot free-kick turned aside at the near post before Pugh ignored the run of Luis Cumbers and fired in to make it 2-0 eight minutes before the break.

Joe Healy was then set up by the unselfish Cumbers but his low shot from the edge of the box was brilliantly turned away by Ross.

Cumbers was denied himself early in the second half before Hampton pulled one back when Patrick Drmola shot home from 20 yards after a free-kick was only half-cleared.

Pires then latched on to Obersteller’s header but saw his shot beaten away, Pugh flicked on Day’s corner but Acheampong failed to get the decisive touch and Pugh shot wide from distance.

Hampton, who had plenty of possession, failed to create many chances but they went close to snatching an equaliser in stoppage time when David Tarpey went through but he shot high and wide with just Thomas to beat.
