A wonder goal from Loick Pires ended Welling’s run of four games without a win on Saturday.

The Wings were always in control against Dorchester but sloppy defending and a shocking refereeing performance made the final scoreline closer than it should have been.

Welling took an 11th-minute lead when player/manager Jamie Day curled in a free-kick after Loui Fazakerley had been fouled on the edge of the area.

Day nearly repeated the trick from the other side of the area while Jack Parkinson set up Andy Pugh who poked the ball over.

Dorchester, never a team short to come forward when trying to influence the officials, were handed a way back into the game on the half-hour with a decision that even they did not appeal for.

Fazakerley clearly won the ball in the penalty box but referee Gary Jerden must have been the only man in the ground to think otherwise and pointed to the spot. Chris Flood confidently tucked away the spot-kick.

Welling were in danger of losing their heads but they regained their composure just before half-time and after Pugh and Pires had both gone close, the latter flicked on for Pugh to round keeper Alan Walker-Harris and claim his 11th goal of the campaign.

There was little to note early in the second half but Pires changed all that in the 65th minute with a 20-yard blockbuster that flew beyond Walker-Harris before he even had time to move.

The Wings striker then missed an easier chance 60 seconds later before Charlton Athletic youngster Ben Davisson, on as a substitute, shot straight at the keeper.

Welling needlessly handed Dorchester a chance to pull a goal back seven minutes from time when Parkinson fouled substitute Rico Wilson and Ryan Dovell netted the spot-kick.

The referee summed up a dreadful day at the office in injury time when Pires had his shirt tugged when he shot wide after being sent clean through and he turned away Welling’s penalty appeals.

Welling entertain Gillingham in the Kent Senior Cup on Monday night, kick-off 7.45pm.
