Welling closed the gap on Blue Square Bet South leaders Salisbury to three points with an impressive demolition of play-off chasing Boreham Wood on Tuesday night.

It maintained Jamie Day's side's winning sequence, which now stands at 12 victories in a row - eight of which have come at Park View Road.

A quiet opening saw Welling start to build some pressure as Kiernan Hughes-Mason twice went close to scoring, seeing his low right-foot shot saved by keeper James Russell after a smart one-two and then when his lob was gobbled up by the keeper after Joe Healy's defence-splitting pass.

Welling went ahead on 27 minutes as Day's deep corner was met by Ben Martin at the far post. His header was turned onto the bar by Russell and as the loose ball was turned into the net, Lee Clarke (pictured right) laid claim to the final touch.

Boreham Wood then had their best spell of the game. Michael Thalassitits beat Fraser Franks inside the box but turned into trouble while Graeme Montgomery's long-range shot was well held by Jamie Turner. The Wings back-up keeper filled in admirably for Sam Mott, who was called up by England C.

Welling added an important second goal on the stroke of half-time as another Day corner caused problems and Franks was left unmarked to head home from inside the six-yard box.

After the break, Ross Lafayette forced a stunning save from Russell, who then had to be alert to tip away Jack Obersteller's deep corner. At the other end, Turner did well to turn away another long-range effort by Montgomery.

Welling wrapped the game up on 63 minutes when Obersteller played a one-two with Healy inside his own half and then worked his way through numerous challenges on his way to the edge of the Boreham Wood penalty area. His inviting cross deserved to be rewarded with a goal and Wood defender Mark Jones duly obliged by turning it into his own net.

Rampant Welling made it 4-0 two minutes later as a neat move handed Hughes-Mason a chance he couldn't miss, and his first goal in six games.

Welling took the chance to rest Day and Lafayette late on ahead of Saturday's derby at Dover although substitute Theo Fairweather-Johnson could have added a fifth with a far-post header. Turner ensured a deserved clean sheet late on with a fine save to turn behind substitute Lewis Todmy's low drive.
