A mother wept as she admitted killing her 11-year-old son at their New Ash Green home.
Jennifer Taylor had denied murder and her guilty plea to manslaughter by diminished responsibility was accepted by the prosecution.
Sentence was adjourned until July 20 so that further psychiatric evidence could obtained.
Judge Andrew Patience QC made an interim hospital order under the Mental Health Act.
Taylor's son James, who attended Wilmington Grammar School, was found drowned at their home in Knights Croft on December 2 last year.
