The D’elight is an especially rider-friendly 114cc scooter, which any car driver can ride with L-plates after taking a Compulsory Basic Training test. One of its key selling points is its especially compact size and weight, measuring up more like a 50cc scooter and weighing only 98kg.

Housed in retro styling with matching 60s-style instruments, the D’elight has tricks up its sleeve to make city riding a breeze. Its turning circle, for example, is just 1.8 metres – 20cm less than is typical for the 51-125cc scooter class. U-turns on the D’elight should be especially easy.

The seat height is a low 755mm, too, so as well as being blessed with a low centre of gravity the D’elight should be comfortable for all heights of rider, including shorter people who might have been put off by taller alternatives.

The four-stroke engine is one of Yamaha’s latest. It’s quiet, unlike smaller two-stroke engines that can be loud and obnoxious, and it returns exceptionally good fuel economy even when used hard. It is designed to give good torque for nipping in and out of traffic and away from the traffic lights, so combined with its surprisingly small size the D’elight should excel in city traffic.

For practicality the scooter has a storage pocket ahead of the rider’s knees, close to the fuel filler cap. The only drawback is that because of the D’elight’s small size it can’t fit a full-face helmet in its under-seat storage space. Instead, an open-face pilot-style one will fit perfectly, as well as complementing the retro styling.

The price will be a very attractive £1,799, which for a scooter with this level of usefulness and style is extremely competitive.
