Facebook and KentOnline are teaming up on a pioneering project which will see two new ‘community’ reporters based in our newsroom.

The initiative, which is being overseen for the National Council for the Training of Journalists, aims to increase diversity in the media and ensure coverage of communities who may not currently have a voice.

It is not essential that the reporters have journalistic experience as they will receive state-of-the-art training from both the NCTJ and Facebook.

The project will see 81 reporters, funded by Facebook, employed across the UK.

In Kent, we are especially keen to hear from people who believe they can help make our newsroom more representative of the communities they serve.

As a Community Reporter, their main role will be to engage with people in specific communities to curate, collate and create content relevant to them.

They will be publishing packages of content to a high standard, writing headlines and uploading words, pictures, video and audio that you have sourced.

Providing insight to the wider newsroom about the issues and concerns of specific communities will be an important part of the role.

We are offering two routes into journalism as a result of this scheme.

For applicants with no previous journalism experience or education, we are offering journalism apprenticeships, which combine intensive training with on-the-job experience in local communities.

For applicants with previous journalism experience or education we are offering trainee roles where support will be provided to obtain the necessary NCTJ qualifications to become a senior reporter.

Flexible arrangements will be considered for the right candidates. The KentOnline newsroom is based in Medway but we have offices across Kent and the role may be based in an office closer to the community the reporters are covering.

These roles are initially offered on two-year fixed term contracts. To apply, click here to complete your online application and submit your CV.

The closing date for applications is Wednesday, February 27.
