Vote for your favourite fish and chip shop in Kent from a shortlist of suggestions put forward by KentOnline social media followers

What are the best fish and chip shops in Kent? That was the question put to followers of KentOnline's social media channels.

It's one of the country's most popular meals, so it's hardly surprising we received hundreds of suggestions - but which gets your vote?

We have been through more than 400 responses to bring you the 12 chippies which received the most mentions on Facebook and Twitter.

Now it's over to you to pick which you consider is the best in the county by taking part in our poll, below.

Receiving three times more recommendation than any other was Barming Fish & Chips, near Maidstone.

"Barming Fish and Chip shop, great food and always friendly service," said Hayley Glover, while Tonia Cottenden put it simply: "Barming fish and chip shop is definitely the best."

Among those who agreed was Mel Wallis, who said: "Barming fish and chips Maidstone without a doubt", Alan Jeffrey who added: "Barming Fish and Chips hands down" and Maureen Stephens who said "Barming fish & chips every time."

There was a wave of support for Beach 48 in Dymchurch. Michael Eve and Claire Parrett were among those to recommend it.

City Fish Bar in Canterbury is undoubtedly a favourite of Claire Carter, who posted: "The best and I mean the best is City Fish Bar in Canterbury!!"

There was a lot of love for the Little Fish Shop in Sandgate, near Folkestone. Lyn Sackree said: "The little fish & chip shop Sandgate! The fish is lush." Tommo Lyngo summed it up in one word: "Amazing."

Newington Fish Bar Ramsgate proved popular. Tim Rice posted: "Newington fish bar Ramsgate are always excellent"

Meanwhile, Ossie's Fish and Chips in Tankerton is "amazing" according to Julie Martin, and plenty of others agreed.

Papas Barn in Ditton, near Maidstone, has a loyal following, including Andrew Court, who responded on Twitter, writing: "Papas in Ditton, by a country mile". Julie Allston added: "Always been our favourite"

There were plenty of fans of Park Road Fish Bar in Hythe. Rob Watts posted: "Always fresh and a decent portion too."

Jo-Anne Arnold does not live in the town but makes a special trip to Hythe for her fill of fish and chips. "I travel 30 mins to get there," she said. "Definitely the best in Kent."

The Pilot Inn, Dungeness, is worth a visit according to, among others, Bernadette Gibbs, who concluded: "The Pilot Inn Dungeness do the best Fish and Chips".

Paul 'BigPauly' Bowman agreed, adding: "The Pilot Inn Dungeness, nothing else can touch them" and Kevin White said: "The Pilot at Dungeness is by far the best fish and chips I have ever had."

The Seafarer in Cheriton, near Folkestone, was among the most mentioned. Paul Hanney said it was his favourite and Tom Bruce replied: "100%, not even a debate."

Eric Howe said: "There is no other option. Only The Seafarer." Katy Mendez enthused: "100% agree."

Torbay of Hythe had plenty of fans. Esther Tilley said: "Torbay in Hythe without a doubt" while Linda M Taylor wrote: "Torbay in Hythe best we've found outside of Yorkshire."

Another seaside location that has impressed is VC Jones in Whitstable. Clare Hadlow said: "VC Jones Whitstable 100%" while Victoria Ann is a fan of its beef dripping chips.

Lisa Wellard was in no doubt: "VC Jones of Whitstable best fish and chips in the whole of Kent."

Others to receive significant backing that did not make the final 12 include Ossies in Sandwich; Castle Takeaway, Dover; Peter;s Fish and Chips, Gillingham; Catch, Ashford; Andrews, in Snodland; Fishbone Grill, Birchington; Fish Inn Two, Herne bay; Middle Street Fish Bar, Deal; A&D Fisheries, Ditton; Cornwallis Fish Bar, Aylesham; and The Smokehouse, Folkestone.
