Jimmy Adams says Kent are finding their form at the right time as hopes of a late push for Championship promotion begin to grow.
Last week’s six-wicket victory at Leicestershire made it consecutive LV= County Championship wins for the first time under their head coach and third-placed Surrey are 40 points ahead of Kent, who have played two fewer games, ahead of the sides clashing on Sunday.
The omens appear to be on Kent’s side as they prepare to travel to Guildford. Surrey are 11 games without a win – a run stretching back to 2002 – on the outground, a venue where Kent have never lost.
Current assistant coach Matt Walker scored a century in a four-wicket win for Kent on their last Championship trip to Woodbridge Road nine years ago this week, while the visitors recorded a 72-run win in 1992 and draws in 1988 and 1990.
Adams insisted confidence was high, adding: “We’ve done pretty well in the last two Championship games against Derbyshire and Leicester and it’s good to have momentum behind you at this stage of the season.
“There have been some good individual performances in the team lately and that helps increase the confidence levels within the dressing room.
“We’ve not won back-to-back Championship games since I have been here so it’s good that we have been able to achieve that.
“It would be good to continue the winning run and see where it takes us but Surrey are in good form, too. There is confidence within our group and hopefully we can continue to build momentum.”
One huge factor is the ongoing concern over Australian bowler Doug Bollinger’s shoulder, with the club awaiting results of a scan carried out this week.
The Spitfires return to NatWest T20 Blast action tomorrow (Friday, 7pm) with the visit of Somerset.
