Charlton 0 Millwall 0 match report
09:25, 17 March 2014
Charlton moved off the foot of the Championship with a goalless draw at old rivals and fellow strugglers Millwall on Saturday.
It was a second stalemate in a row for new Addicks boss Jose Riga, following the 0-0 draw at Huddersfield last Wednesday and enough to lift them to 22nd place.
Riga said: “I would prefer to win but I’m happy with the way the players showed they would take something here at Millwall. We are not last any more and psychologically that’s important.”
There were early chances for both teams, with Lions youngster Fred Onyedinma heading wide from Shaun Williams’ cross, while Callum Harriott finished tamely in a one-on-one for Charlton.
Simeon Jackson worked Addicks keeper Ben Hamer and Steve Morison fired wide as Millwall made the running.
But Charlton enjoyed a decent start to the second half, with Rhoys Wiggins’ cross volleyed wide by Harriott, then substitute Reza Ghoochannejhad fired straight at David Forde when through on goal.
Millwall finished strongly but Charlton held on for a valuable point and will move out of the bottom three on goal difference if they beat Bournemouth at home on Tuesday night.
