Welling put an end to their poor record at Braintree after coming from behind to win on Tuesday night.

The Wings, who had never previously won at Cressing Road, were missing several players, including top scorer Ross Lafayette, but three midfielders scored their goals.

Among them was player/boss Jamie Day, back in the team to replace the suspended Jake Gallagher for the first time this season.

Braintree started well and Jordan Cox set up strike partner Charlie Strutton on 22 minutes but the forward shot narrowly over as keeper Lee Butcher rushed out.

Braintree did go ahead on 27 minutes when Strutton beat the offside trap to volley in a left-wing cross from 10 yards.

Welling's response was immediate, and led by Day. His 29th-minute free-kick from 30 yards had keeper Nathan McDonald scrambling across to turn the ball behind. Presented with another set piece nearer to goal two minutes later, Day went with more pace and left McDonald rooted to the spot to level the scores.
The second half was low on quality and chances until Welling went ahead with 18 minutes left.

Loui Fazakerley won the ball ahead of ex-Fleet man Liam Enver-Marum and fed Kurtis Guthrie, whose right-wing cross was cleverly left by Loick Pires for Lee Clarke to drive home.

A similar move saw the Wings go 3-1 ahead on 82 minutes. Guthrie again crossed from the right, Clarke did the step-over and Alex Dyer arrived to fire low beyond McDonald.

Braintree pulled one back in the 89th minute when a free-kick was headed only as far as Cox, who volleyed in from inside the area.

And they nearly levelled in stoppage time but Cox was just unable to get on the end of a deep free-kick that was missed by Butcher.
