Adam Barrett has joined AFC Wimbledon on a two month loan.
The Gills skipper was transfer listed over a week ago after manager Peter Taylor admitted he was unable to offer him regular football.
League 2 Wimbledon are in need of cover at the back following an injury to another former Gills player, Andy Frampton.
Frampton will be out for around eight weeks after breaking his ankle in training.
Barrett, 34, will not be eligible to play in any cup competitions. The deal runs until October 4.
He joins former Gills striker Adebayo Akinfenwa at Kingsmeadow. Both players are set to make their debuts for the Wombles against Shrewsbury on Saturday.
Wimbledon boss Neil Ardley, talking to the website of the League 2 club, said: "We had a devastating blow with Andy Frampton’s injury and we looked at various options, including bringing in a younger, athletic defender.
"But we felt that we still needed someone with similar qualities to Andy and the leadership that he brings.
"Adam understands the game and is a leader of men. He is a great talker too and is also a left footer the same as Andy so he is a great signing for us.”
