Frustrated Adebayo Akinfenwa has vowed to stay and fight for a place in the Gillingham team.

The big striker has yet to start a league game under Peter Taylor but came off the bench in Gills’ 4-1 defeat at Rotherham on Saturday and set up a goal for Cody McDonald with his first touch.

It briefly raised hopes of a revival after Gills trailed 3-0 at half-time but Rotherham added a fourth.

Akinfenwa turned down several offers to rejoin Gills in the summer. And while he accepts it will be hard to get in the side ahead of Danny Kedwell, the 31-year-old just wants to play.

He said: “Everybody knows I had a lot of options before coming here.

“I loved it first time around and even though I’m not playing I still enjoy it, and I still enjoy the fans and the place.

“But ultimately you want to play minutes. You don’t want the season going by and saying you only started 10 games as a footballer.

“But with me, I’m a fighter and I’m going to fight and train hard, and try to get more minutes on the pitch.”
