Simon Church scored against former club Huddersfield on Saturday to send Charlton through to the fifth round of the FA Cup for the first time since 2006.
Church, who played seven games for the Terriers on loan from Reading last season, set up a tie at Sheffield Wednesday when he struck the only goal on 54 minutes.
A bad-tempered first half, short on action, threatened to get out of hand when Dale Stephens went in late on Adam Hammill.
Stephens was booked for the challenge, while the melee that followed led to cautions for Michael Morrison and the hosts’ Anthony Gerrard.
Addicks; keeper Ben Alnwick denied Tommy Smith early in the second half before Lawrie Wilson pounced on a mistake by Oscar Gobern to set up Church’s winner.
Danny Ward missed an open goal from Sean Scannell’s pass as Charlton held on.
Addicks boss Chris Powell said: “I’m pleased because our season needs a bit of a lift and this provides it.”
