Kent Cricket batsman Fabian Cowdrey feels he 'failed to capitalise' on opportunity after being handed County Championship debut at Glamorgan

Fabian Cowdrey’s delight at his first Championship call-up quickly turned to disappointment as he feels he “failed to capitalise on the opportunity.”
He made his Championship bow at Glamorgan on Sunday, batting at No.3 in Cardiff after Sam Northeast was dropped following a string of low scores and the 21-year-old told fans on twitter of his ‘pride’ at making his debut, which came after a good run of form in 2nd XI cricket.
However, Cowdrey scored just nine in each innings of the LV= County Championship Division 2 clash, which saw Kent struggle and is not sure whether he will have the chance to bounce back when Derbyshire visit Canterbury, starting on Sunday.
He said: “Hopefully, it’s onwards and upwards from here. I was over the moon to get the call. It was good to get a go, just a shame not to capitalise on the opportunity.
“Hopefully, over the next few games, or in the near future, I can make the most of a chance.”
He added: “Of course it’s good to be in the team and able to contribute and it’s been a little taster of it for me this week.
“Sometimes you can’t quite cash-in but hopefully on another day, I can go on and get a big score and cement my place.”
Northeast scored 135 and 93 in two innings against Gloucestershire 2nds at Maidstone this week, staking his claim for an immediate return to the fold and Cowdrey admitted: “I’m happy to see everyone do well. It’s a team sport and I’m happy he did well.
“When I spoke to Jimmy (Adams) and Rob Key, there was no mention of length of time in the side, they just said ‘you’ve been picked – well done’ so I’m not sure there is a time-meter on it.
“We’ll see how we go and hopefully I’ll keep getting the nod.”
