Easy men's league victory for Francis
00:00, 07 December 2001
NICK FRANCIS (Cambridge Harriers) may have won the event but Medway and Maidstone consolidated their overall team position in the third Kent Senior Men's League race held at Danson Park at the weekend. Francis was thoroughly at home on his local stamping ground at Bexley and ran away with the race for victory by 38 seconds, an exceptional margin at this level.
Blackheath Harriers turned out the big guns with Joe Mills (second) and Ray Smith (fourth) split by Barry Royden's fast finish for M&M. Huw Evans (Tonbridge) was a close fifth ahead of the youthful M&M pair, Andrew Thomas and Darren Mitchell.
A slightly off colour Gareth Williams (12th), was next home for M&M with support from Pat Curran (15th), Alan McDougall (16th), Tim Alexander (21st) and Geoff Baxter (28th) in prominent positions for the club that now leads the main league competition by just seven points from Blackheath Harriers.
The deciding match will be held on February 16 at Parkwood School, Swanley.
