Peter Taylor feels Gillingham's youngsters will learn from the second-half performance at Welling.
The Gills boss fielded two sides for Saturday's pre-season friendly at Park View Road.
He liked what he saw in the first half as Antonio German gave the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Welling equalised after the break and had the best of the second half as the match ended 1-1. Not that the result mattered.
Taylor said: "It was a very good first half. I thought we played very well, some good stuff and probably should have been more up than 1-0.
"The second half was disappointing but it was a very young team and I'm sure they will get a lot out of it and learn from some of the mistakes they made and that's where some of these games are good.
"The most important thing is getting something out of the game, learning from it, getting good fitness. I think we're getting all of those.
"Even today, second half, where it was probably our worst performance, we'll get something out of that."
Gills go to Dartford for their next pre-season friendly on Tuesday.
