Gills take on Dutch at Priestfield
09:53, 28 July 2004
GILLINGHAM face their first pre-season test on home soil as they welcome Dutch side Willem II to Priestfield this evening. Kick-off is at 7.45pm.
Last night Gills ended their pre-season travels with a 2-1 win over Canvey Island. They required second half goals from Matt Jarvis and Mamady Sidebe to win the match after Canvey had gone into the break a goal up.
John Kennedy had put Canvey ahead on the half hour after a frantic start, as he made Gills pay for not clearing the ball and stabbed home from close range.
It took until the hour mark before the Gills equalised as Matt Jarvis, who has made big impressions during pre-season, tucked the ball under the keeper after running onto Ashley Carew’s long pass.
Nine minutes later Sidebe claimed the winner after Dean Beckwith long range effort was deflected towards the strikers, who turned and scored the winner.
Team: Banks, Howell (Wallis 45), Hope (Beckwith 45), Cox (L Johnson 45), Rose, Perpetuini (Carew 58), Hessenthaler, Spiller (Crofts 45), Agyemang (Sidebe 45), Byfield (T Johnson 45), Jarvis.
