Gills will be a better side following their scare against Port Vale, says manager Peter Taylor.

He felt his team were outstanding for 70 minutes as they opened up a 3-0 lead against Micky Adams’ men.

Vale’s late fightback left Gills holding on and Taylor wants his players to learn from the experience.

He said: “It wasn’t great to see but I’m sure we’ll be better for it the next time.

“We’ve won a game, we’ve got three points and if we’d played for 90 minutes how we played for 70 and won the game 3-0, that would have been fabulous.

“We’ve had a negative 20 minutes but we can learn more from that, so that’s where it ends up a good day.”

Taylor added: “People might think 3-0 is a safe lead but it’s not because you just never know.

“We didn’t change anything. In the end, Port Vale scored from a corner and that was what changed it. Then all of a sudden we got a bit panicky.

“We probably stopped pressing as high up the field as we should have been. But it happens.

“I’m sure there’ll be other teams in the country that were winning and all of a sudden they conceded because they were trying to protect the lead.”

Taylor is convinced the team are improving and his players agree.

He said: “I feel all the players think we’re getting better.

“I hear them talking and they feel we’re a bit more athletic now, so we’ve got more of a chance to cause some problems or get the ball back.

“I’m happier the way the team are looking at the minute. The players have responded and the loan players we’ve brought in have also done fantastically for us. The spirit is excellent.”
