Welling remain 13th in Skrill Premier after picking up a point from their long trip to Gateshead on Tuesday night.
The Wings, looking to build on their 3-0 victory over Woking last Saturday, started brightly and led thanks to Joe Healy's eighth goal of the season.
But the home side got into their stride later in the first half, drew level early in the second period and then put the Wings under further pressure in the latter stages.
Lee Clarke had an early long-range shot comfortably saved before Welling took a 10th-minute lead.
Leading scorer Ross Lafayette turned provider, capitalising on a defensive slip and crossing for Joe Healy to head in.
Gateshead found their tempo midway through the half and Welling keeper Lee Butcher had to save from Marcus Maddison and JJ O'Donnell, twice.
O'Donnell then hit the bar when it looked easier to score as the visitors were stretched before half-time.
Welling's goal led a charmed life but their resistance was broken early in the second half when Healy was penalised in the box and Maddison scored from the spot, the third successive game Gateshead had won a penalty.
With his team on the back foot, Welling boss Jamie Day used all three substitute before the hour mark - bringing on Jake Gallagher, Loui Fazakerley and Luis Cumbers.
It had the desired effect as a late header aside Gateshead failed to create as many clear-cut chances as their pressure perhaps suggested.
Welling assistant boss Barry Ashby, however, was sent to the stands in injury time after disputing a lack of a free-kick when Lafayette appeared to have been fouled.
