Informal talks held on future of Kent soccer

00:00, 21 February 2002

KENT County FA chief executive Keith Masters has played down the significance of a meeting held to discuss senior football in Kent.

Around 30 delegates representing clubs from Gillingham to Crockenhill, attended the meeting at Chatham, but Mr Masters described it as more of an "informal" get together. He said selected clubs were asked to attend to help a KCFA working party draw up a report into senior soccer, which is due to be presented to the association by May 1.

Mr Masters explained: "The idea was to obtain a general overview. It was interesting and useful but the report has still to be prepared, produced and presented and until then there's not really anything to say."

The meeting lasted more than three hours and was chaired by Doug Gillard, chairman of the Dr Martens League. Among those also present were Bill Williams, Dover's general manager, and John Moules, chief executive of the Nationwide Conference.

Tunbridge Wells chairman Ron Rogers was part of a seven-strong delegation from the Bass Brewers Kent League which also inlcuded league vice-chairman Denise Richmond. He said the meeting had proved a good platform for discussion about facilities, referees and anomalies in disciplinary procedures.

Mr Rogers added: "What I personally got out of it was the fact that there appears to be a more open approach from the KCFA to listen to problems that senior soccer is facing and to try to help with advice and support."
