KCFA: Too much soccer can harm youngsters
00:00, 24 January 2002
WORRIED parents who fear their children may be suffering from playing too much football can now turn to the Kent County FA for advice. Overuse injuries, sustained by both boys and girls, stem from playing too many matches.
The more gifted players are asked to play for school, district, county, club and other representative teams. The Football Association stipulate that players under the ages of nine and 11 and under 12 and 16 should play no more than 30 games per season.
Apart from too many games, training sessions may involve repetitive activities, which may cause injuries. Tendonitis, torn muscles, sprains, stress fractures, unusual swelling and stiffness, aching joints and muscles can all be caused by overuse.
To help tackle the problem, the KCFA have teamed up with a qualified sports graduate therapist to assist with a broad range of injuries which are ruining the enjoyment of so many youngsters.
Kent County FA chief executive Keith Masters said: "Overuse injuries are becoming a big problem for thousands of young people who enjoy playing football all over the country.
"Parents in Kent who believe their child is suffering should contact us (at the KCFA) on 01634 843824 and we will put them in touch with Simon Kavanagh, our fully qualified sports therapist, who will give a free diagnosis."
