Peter Taylor is hopeful of seeing Danny Kedwell back before the end of the season.
The Gills striker has been out since January following a hernia operation. He recovered from that only to pick up a knee injury.
Taylor was hoping an injection would speed up the recovery but the club received bad news on Monday.
Gillingham boss Taylor said: “He might have a chance for the last two weeks. It is not certain yet.
“He went to see someone on Monday and it wasn’t great news. We were hoping a little injection was going to speed it along. It wasn’t the case.
“They are talking about another type of injection but not one to speed it along. It might help the recovery. They are still talking two or three weeks out. It is frustrating for Danny but that’s football and you can’t do anything about it.”
