Kent athletics stars were in fine form for a Great Britain & NI Junior side at the Loughborough International Athletics meeting on Sunday.

Blackheath & Bromley AC star Dina Asher-Smith stole the show with a blistering Personal Best in the 100m, storming home in 11.20, a fifth of a second ahead of World and European Junior Champion Jodie Williams, silver medallist at last year’s European under-23 Championships.

Asher-Smith’s time was almost half a second inside the qualifying time for this summer’s IAAF World Junior Championships in Oregon, in July.

The 18-year-old said: “I’m in so much shock. I had no idea that I could run 11.20 – I’m just speechless. I just wanted to go out there and see how I faired in such a high quality race, as I tend to tense up sometimes; my focus was just on execution. And I guess that performance just came with execution.

“The World Junior Championships in Eugene is my focus this summer, but I’ve no idea which event - thr 100m or 200m - I’ll run yet. It’ll depend on how I’m feeling through the season, how trials goes and then where I’m ranked in the world.”

The Orpington ace made it two wins on the day as the World Championship 4x100m relay bronze medallist fired GB Juniors into a lead which they never surrendered, stopping the clock in 45.05.

In the women’s 200m race Asher-Smith’s B&B teammate Shannon Hylton took second behind Williams in World Junior qualifying time of 23.30.

Her twin sister Cheriece Hylton was in the GB side which finished fifth in the 4x400m in 3.40.32.

In the women’s 1,500m, a day before her 17th birthday Bobby Clay of Invicta East Kent AC missed the qualifying standard by less than a second as she finished third in 4.18.98, more than four seconds behind winner Alison Leonard.

Sean Molloy of Tonbridge AC, 18, was fifth in the men’s 800m in 1.50.23 - 2.15secs behind the winner and 1.83 off a qualifying time for Oregon - a mark the Sittingbourne star actually bettered in June 2012.
