Kent Cricket chiefs planning to sell naming rights to the St Lawrence Ground

Kent Cricket Club’s St Lawrence Ground could be renamed under an agreement with new sponsors.
Chief executive Jamie Clifford told members at the club’s annual meeting on Monday night that discussions have started with a potential backer and: "It is the club’s intention to enter into an arrangement for the naming rights for the ground. Watch this space."
Mr Clifford (pictured at the ground) added: "It’s important to say, it’s a brand with which the club feel particularly comfortable and it’s a long-term arrangement, so we’ll not be changing the name of the ground every five minutes.
"Also within the ground name, St Lawrence will still feature."
One member told Mr Clifford: "I’ve got to say it’s quite worrying to suggest the ground might change name" but chairman George Kennedy moved to allay his fears saying: "The Oval is known these days as The Kia Oval but it’s still known as The Oval to cricket lovers.
"Ours will be whatever-it-is, St Lawrence Ground – we are not going to lose the St Lawrence element of the name for anything.
"But if there are people willing to gain the extra publicity from association with a club like this and we believe there is money in it for us, we would be foolish to turn it down."
As well as a report into the club’s finances over the previous year, which showed a post-tax loss of £628,000, members were also told about plans to develop a cricket academy at a revamped Beckenham – though Mr Kennedy insisted the club’s financial investment ‘will be minimal’ as they will pay a ‘peppercorn rent.’
As well as revamped ground facilities, the club are talking to developers about creating new facilities to cater for promising youngsters from the four Kent London boroughs.
