RUGBY fans who have only ever dreamed of triumphantly holding aloft the Webb Ellis Cup will be able to fulfill their wish at this year’s Kent Show.

The cup, the Holy Grail for rugby teams across the world, is coming to Kent for the annual show, to be held at the County Showground, Detling, near Maidstone, from July 15 to 17.

The cup will be on display at the Kent Messenger Group’s stand and its appearance is part of the Rugby Football Union’s (RFU) Sweet Chariot Tour, which aims to bring the trophy to events across Britain this summer.

The Kent Messenger, media sponsor of the Kent Show, has chosen sport in the community as the theme for its stand and visitors will be able to have a go at competing in a number of sports, including running, rowing, cycling, archery and basketball.

There will be categories for men, women and children, with winners ever day and staff and equipment will be provided by Maidstone Leisure Centre.

Matt Mitchell, RFU rugby development officer, said: "As well as seeing the trophy visitors will be able to take part in rugby activities, kick a World Cup-winning drop goal or find out whether they’re a Jason Robinson in the making.

"There will also be the chance to get a picture taken with the Webb Ellis Cup."

This year’s Kent Show also features the usual fruit shows, farming areas, young farmers’ clubs, science areas, a small animal marquee, cattle and sheep and bands and entertainment during the evenings.

The show centrepiece will be a massive food and drink expo in the central Kent Pavilion.

The Kent County Agricultural Society, a registered charity which has run the show for 75 years,will also be selling wristbands at the show to raise money for Kent-based farming groups.

Show manager David Goff, said: "We are looking to sell a large number of these wristbands so that we can give money to the farming community in Kent. We are particularly keen to support Kent Young Farmers who struggle to gain funding."

The bands will be available at the Kent Show Office and the Kent Pavilion during the three show days.
