Charlie Lee says Gills deserved their win against Crawley after a season hit by bad luck

07:50, 11 March 2014

Anybody who had money on Charlie Lee scoring the first goal against Crawley would have been raising a glass to the Gills midfielder on Saturday night.

Substitute Lee was an 85/1 shot to open the scoring and even if footballers were allowed to bet, Lee admitted: “I wouldn’t have backed it!”

It was Lee’s second goal in as many weeks, following his strike against Bristol City last weekend and he’s up for making it three in three against Coventry.

Lee revealed he mis-hit his 88th-minute strike from Leon Legge’s header that lifted Gills up to 14th place in League 1.

But he felt the Gills deserved their good fortune after a campaign dogged by bad luck.

He said: “It was a good header from Leggy and the defenders didn’t expect me to shank it. Obviously I tricked them because if I’d hit it properly, it wouldn’t have gone in!

“We didn’t play as well but we dug in, kept a clean sheet and we nicked a goal at the end.”

Lee is just glad to be playing after an injury-hit season but is ready to start matches if Taylor decides the time is right.

That chance could come against Coventry, who Lee believes Gills are playing at the right time after four defeats in six games for the Sky Blues.

He said: “It’s been a frustrating time for me, being injured, coming back, then getting injured again.

“I’ve just got to keep doing what I’m doing. If it’s from the bench, it’s from the bench. If it’s starting, it’s starting. As always, I’ll give 100%.

“Coventry are having up-and-down spells in their season and it’s probably not a bad time to play them.”
