Bay's neighbours Whitstable are in a spot more trouble at the wrong end of Ryman League Division 1 South, though they do have a four point cushion with five games to play.

Herne Bay went down 3-2 at Burgess Hill last night, as we heard earlier, and boss Sam Denly thinks they should be safe already, despite a tough looking run-in.

Back to spherical balls again and if you cast your mind back to 10:40 we touched on Faversham Town and their promotion push in Ryman League Division 1 South.

Boss Ray Turner knows it's not likely that his side will claim a play-off place, but they have a chance. Five games to go, five wins required, and even that might not do it.

Canterbury's promotion hopes in National 2 suffered a huge blow as they lost to Ampthill last weekend, and slipped to third in the process.

If they are to have any hope of second-place, the city club now need to beat fourth-placed Bishop's Stortford on Saturday - a result which would secure their highest ever finish in the league pyramid.

Yes the Kent Grand National was held at Charing the day after the Aintree showpiece, and the winner crossed the line in a Blaze of glory.

Wednesday night football round-up anyone?

Herne Bay were left feeling hard done by after conceding an 87th-minute winner to go down 3-2 at Burgess Hill Town in Ryman League Division 1 South.

Hill led 2-0 inside 17 minutes but Sam Hasler and Jamie Turner scored two in eight minutes late-on, looking to have earned a point, before the play-off chasers snatched a winner.

Bay remain eight points clear of trouble while Hill's win hurts eighth-placed Faversham's already slim hopes of snatching the final play-off spot.

Cray Valley moved up to sixth place in the Southern Counties East League with a 2-1 win over Canterbury City

Lauren Hamici got the late winner at Winch's Field, after both teams had scored within two minutes of each other earlier in the game.

Harrison Carnegie put Cray ahead after 68 minutes, before Lloyd Woolford put City back on level terms soon afterwards.

The defeat, City's third in a week, leaves them 13th in the table, one of three clubs on 24 points.

Kent Sportsday wishes league chair Denise Richmond good luck when she runs in her fifth London Marathon on Sunday.

She hopes to jointly raise £2,000 for the British Heart Foundation.

10:25 - BREAKING NEWS

He might not be playing for a Premier League side next season like his teammate Johan Ter Horst, but Paul Booth is happy to stay with Folkestone Invicta, whether they are promoted or not.

The veteran striker only arrived at the club from Maidstone in November but has scored 23 goals in 26 games to help Invicta climb the Ryman League Division 1 South table.

He has missed the past two games with a groin injury but should return for the final five, as Invicta seek to cement their play-off place.

Manager Neil Cugley said: “Boothy has been superb for us ever since he arrived and we are delighted he’s going to stay next season.

“He may be 37, but he’s a superfit lad and a model professional and it has been a tremendous help to the likes of Johan Ter Horst to have someone with experience to learn from.

“We may decide to be a bit more choosy over how much we use him – he may not play in all of the cup games, for example - but he’s going to help me out by coaching the forwards, which I’m sure will prove a great benefit to the club.”

Cugley added: "Boothy’s obviously gives us some Premier Division quality if we get promotion, but he is happy to stay here whatever happens.

“He likes it here, likes the club and the supporters and it goes without saying that we all love having him here.”

Dover and Tonbridge might be battling at opposite ends of the Skrill South table but they have both endured their fair share of frustration already this season.

Assistant boss Jake Leberl says the daunting run of three games in six days, starting at Longmead tonight, is the perfect chance for the Whites players to show their play-off credentials.

Darren Stevens is very excited. That's understandable. He genuinely feared he might not be allowed to play the game that's been his life for more than 20 years this summer and now he knows he can.

However that's not the only reason for his excitement, it's also got something to do with the fact he believed Kent can actually compete for honours this season, and maybe, just maybe, get themselves back to the top-table of county cricket.

Wednesday was a good day for 20-year-old future England star Daniel Bell-Drummond.

He passed 1,000 First Class runs by scoring his second FC century and posting a new FC best, retiring on 103* against Loughborough MCCU.

The foundations for that knock were not laid in the Canterbury nets this winter, however, they were formed in the soupy heat of the other side of the planet.

You know when you're on a night out, you've been in the same place for a little while and are starting to think about whether to get another here or move on to somewhere different?

Well it's always helpful when someone you're close to and respect effectively makes that decision for you, or at least makes it easier. You either follow their lead or go it alone.

Steve Brown's new contract as manager is the equivalent of him putting his coat on the back of a chair and getting another round in at Ebbsfleet, and now the only question is whether the players are going to remain in the Fleet Arms for an extended stay, or fancy their chances flying solo elsewhere.

Dartford host Grimsby Town in what is possibly the biggest Thursday night game of this or any other season.... Europa League included.
