A rare start for Adam Miller against Grimsby last weekend was a welcome tonic for the Gillingham midfielder and he’s hoping he can keep that place this weekend.

Miller admits to finding life on the bench tough but it hasn’t affected his morale or his hunger to succeed.

“It’s horrible and I hate it,” said Miller. “It’s something I don’t like doing. It’s the manager’s decision and it’s down to him and I have to respect whatever decision he makes.

“I’ve gone about my training in the right way and I believe I’ve trained harder than anyone here and taken it up another level. I don’t enjoy training but I try to take it up another level and the gaffer and Robbo (Mark Robson) have been pleased with what I’ve done.

"When I was four years old and I first started football my idea of playing football wasn’t to sit on the bench, it was to play in front of crowds and enjoy it, win games and get lots of success.”

Miller hopes the win last weekend will be enough to convince manager Mark Stimson to keep him in the starting 11 against Shrewsbury on Saturday.

“What makes good teams is good competition,” he said. “If there is no competition then people get complacent and the team doesn’t go in the right direction."
