Peter Taylor had mixed emotions after Gills' 3-2 win over Port Vale on Saturday.

They were playing well and cruising to victory after Adebayo Akinfenwa's double and a Cody McDonald strike.

But Vale dominated the last 20 minutes and set up a tense finish by scoring two late goals.

Gills boss Taylor, whose side are in the top half of League 1 for the first time this season, said: "We scored three terrific goals and for 70 minutes I'm extremely happy.

"Then last 20 minutes I've probably aged too much because we went from doing well to being incredibly negative and nervous and panicked.

"All we spoke about after the game was that cannot happen. We've got to do better than that."

Chris Robertson launched the fightback with a header that was allowed to stand despite the best efforts of Joe Piggott to clear off the line.

And Taylor added: "The players are disappointed the first goal was given to Port Vale.

"They didn't think it was clear the linesman could give that.

"I've said that it doesn't matter, it's just a decision that went against us.

"That's what happens and you can't collapse the way we did because the way Port Vale finished, they had at least three goals in them, so we had to be careful."

Taylor praised two-goal Akinfenwa after restoring him to the starting line-up.

The Gills boss said: "I'm delighted with Bayo because he scored two great goals but I thought some of his back-to-goal play was excellent."
