Stuart Nelson insists any challenge for his No.1 shirt won’t change his mentality one bit.

Gillingham have strengthened their goalkeeping department with the arrival of former Leyton Orient, Southend and Aldershot player Glenn Morris.

But Nelson, who was voted Gills supporters’ player-of-the-year last season, knows only one way to play.

He said: “Whether I had someone challenging me or not, I wouldn’t have given any more or any less last season, even if I had Joe Hart on the bench.

“I train as hard as I can ready for Saturdays and go over my game in fine detail to make sure I can be better in the next game.

“I will give my best for this club, which is what I’ve always tried to do.” Nelson may have excelled last season but he is always chasing perfection.

“I never stop thinking about my game and there is always more you can do,” said the 32-year-old.

“I am just trying to maximise my potential. If I can get the best out of myself, then everyone will benefit.”
