TWO new course records were set as Paddock Wood AC dominated the Mascalls School 10k and 5k races.
Both records fell in the 5k race which was held over one lap of the hilly, multi-terrain course around the school and Paddock Wood village. The 5k race was held first with Andrew Cross (Tunbridge Wells Harriers) first home from promising 15-year-old Sam Cox of Paddock Wood AC.
Michelle Read of Deal Triathletes eclipsed Imogen Firth's 1999 course record of 24min 1sec with a circuit timed at 22.27 to win the womenÕs race from Marcia Peacock of Sevenoaks AC.
With Mascalls School pupil Sam Cox ineligible for the junior category this year, the winning boy was Robert Sayer (Mascalls) from Mark Underdown (Sheppey) while the junior girls champion was the diminutive Catherine Saville in a new record 22.29 from her club colleague, Leanne Collier of Medway and Maidstone AC.
Paddock Wood AC were comfortable team winners on home soil to set the scene for the 10k race which followed.
In the main event a brisk pace was set by triathlete James Larkin (Hastings Runners) and former Kent Fitness League champion, Steve Roberts of Paddock Wood AC.
Alan Newman held third place throughout representing his second claim club, Paddock Wood, as Wayne Leaney and Andy Fletcher filled the next two places for a clean sweep by the Mascalls School based club.
Helen Wheeler (Ashford AC) led the women's race from the start and finished 68 seconds clear of Janice Moorekite (Invicta) from Maidstone who completed her first race since being forced to miss the London Marathon with a virus.
Kim Howes (Maidstone Harriers), Sue James (Paddock Wood) and Carol Emery (Paddock Wood) filled the next three positions in a classy demonstration of veteran athletic ability. Paddock Wood AC secured the team trophies and were awarded the Golden Boot for the most successful team overall.
Mascalls School added more than £6,000 to their school funds through the entry fees and sponsorship which will help considerably towards the target of £50,000 by September to secure specialist status recognition for the school.
