Peter Taylor hopes to find out soon if Saturday’s game against Shrewsbury was his last.

The Gills drew 1-1 at Priestfield and with it ended Taylor’s spell as manager of the club.

Taylor guided the side to League 1 safety – with a game to spare – and now wants to know if he’ll be the man in the hot-seat to rebuild in the summer.

Asked after the match if he would be returning, Taylor said: “I don’t know yet. I am sure I will be speaking to the chairman very soon to found out and to get that sorted. As a club we want to progress.

“I have enjoyed it here and I am really pleased I had the opportunity to come. I am really pleased with the way it has worked out, because we have stayed in the division, so I think that is progress.

“I wouldn’t mind having a bit longer at it because I wouldn’t mind seeing what we can do next season. We will have to wait and see on that one.”

Taylor’s side went ahead against Shrewsbury, with a goal from captain Adam Barrett, but had to settle for a point after conceding soon after.

Overall, Taylor felt his side were the better team.

“Lots of things in the performance were good,” he said.

“There were a few things we could have been braver at and we could have gone forward more but some of the passing was good.

“We were really unlucky not to score a few goals before half-time through Cody and then we would have had a much easier second half. But we carried on and kept going.

“It was a good goal from Adam and a great little chip from Jake Hessenthaler (for the assist). Overall I am happy we didn’t get beat and we showed some decent things but as a manager you are always trying to get perfection.”
