Sub McDonald heads Gillingham towards safety
16:47, 09 April 2007
Gillingham 1 Bristol City 0
DEAN McDONALD headed the winner for Gillingham to put further distance between themselves and the relegation zone.
Neither team managed a goal before the break, but it was Gillingham who came closest, when Ben Chorley?s looping header had to be cleared off the line on 27 minutes.
Bristol City?s best efforts of the half came early on when chances for Phil Jevons and Brian Wilson missed the target.
The Gills upped the tempo after the break and substitute striker Dean McDonald made a big difference.
He first hit a half-volley a foot wide of the post before heading home Mark Bentley's cross from close range.
City piled forward at the end and hit the bar but they couldn't breach Gills' defence who hung on for a precious three points.
