Manager Peter Taylor is hoping the final two matches will give Gillingham fans hope of a brighter future.

The Gills face Preston on Saturday before ending their season against Shrewsbury at Priestfield next weekend.

Taylor, who is on the verge of leading the Gills to League 1 safety, said: “The way this season has gone, it’s not been good enough and so I want us to finish off the season well.

“If we can get two good results from the next two games then hopefully the supporters can have something to look forward to in August.”

Taylor has won 13 of the 33 league games he has taken charge of this season, having taken over Martin Allen’s team in October.

“I am looking forward to the season finishing,” admitted the 61-year-old.

“It has been tough for everyone and there have been too many Saturday nights where you’ve gone home disappointed, because the team hasn’t won, and that’s happened a lot to us this year. But we have all hung in there and worked to get the results we’ve needed.

“I think the players have been outstanding and they have worked extremely hard as a group."
