Peter Taylor was pleased with his team's showing at Folkestone following a week of intensive training.

The Gills returned to Kent on Friday night, from their camp in Essex, where they had been trained hard.

Gillingham received a decent test against Ryman League Folkestone, at the Ryman League side's Fullicks Stadium, but came out comfortably on top.

Gills boss Taylor said: "It was a good test and I thought Folkestone did well. They tried to pass the ball around as well and they asked some different questions.

"Overall I was very pleased with the 90 minutes, simply because the players have had a hard week. We have trained twice a day every day and it was only Wednesday when the players didn't train twice.

"They trained again on Friday morning and it was a case of just adding to their fitness and I thought they did some good things."

Taylor fielded 22 different players throughout the match, introducing five of his new signings in the second half. Two of those scored, as Brennan Dickenson and Doug Loft added to Danny Kedwell's first half strike.

"I wanted the new boys to have a look at the team for the first half, that's why I didn't want to put them in," said Taylor.

"There was nothing to be given away (by the team selection) it was just a case of giving everyone 45 minutes.

"I think that there were a few very good things to take from the game, a few negatives as well, but as long as we learn from that.

"For me, in the first game of pre-season players always try too hard. There were times when we lost the ball in the first half but that didn't surprise me because I think that is how your normal first pre-season goes."
