Gillingham boss Peter Taylor is exploring several options as he looks to bolster his defence.

Taylor has all-but-completed his summer transfer business but is keen to add another face before the season starts on August 9.

He said: “I wanted to make sure we had cover in most positions in case we got an injury. I still think there is another defender who could be coming in.

“There are three people I am looking at. I have spoken to the clubs or agents concerned and it’s just about making my mind up as to whether it’s necessary.”

Taylor has yet to decide whether to offer a deal to trialist Gary Borrowdale. If he doesn’t, then he may need to bring in someone else to challenge Joe Martin at left-back.

He may also be considering whether to bring in another centre-back. At present Callum Davies is trying to push for a place alongside more experienced pros John Egan, Adam Barrett and Leon Legge.

Taylor said: “It is still on the cards and I am still weighing up certain things.

“I hope it is a permanent signing and if not, if it is a loan, it would be a long-term loan so it would be like a permanent.

“I am making sure we have enough back-up and quality and the right people in the right slots.”
